My first concept for the monotype brief was to create a website, maybe this wasn’t so much as a mistake and more that the project evolved into something that was best suited for the interactive and gestural capabilities of a tablet. I was well on my way to designing an interactive website but felt it wasn’t the best solution so I discarded the website and began a fresh on the UI/UX design on a tablet. Here is one of many website flats I was working on, you can see how some of it influenced my finished tablet design. http://www.donnachacarrolldesign.com/monotype.html
My brother Eoin Carroll is currently doing a 6 week csc trip in Brazil. “The program empowers IBM employees as global citizens by sending groups of 10 – 15 individuals from different countries with a range of skills to an emerging market for four week community-based assignments. ” Click the headline to link to his blog.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Torvill and Dean winning Olympic Gold in Sarajevo BBCs Newsnight chose my lego stop motion to use within the closing credits of the program. BBC Newsnight is a news programme that examines and analysis politics and major national issues in the uk. The programme is watched by over a million people worldwide. Unfortunately the presenter isn’t familiar with Irish name pronunciation and said my name slightly wrong.Watch the video of the credits above.
The first of my animation brochures examined the animator students main tools. The hand, the pencil and the mind. My idea originally was to somehow combine these tools using a vibrant and simple illustration which would attract the attention of potential animation students. Through my iterations I brought in a world, this symbolises the animators world. I then iterated with type, colour and composition until I got the right combination. http://www.donnachacarrolldesign.com/broch.html
The process of this Animation Brochure derived from the freedom of the Animation course in IADT. The tutors allow the students to come with their own style as opposed to other colleges that may prefer a particular style of animation. I began the process by experimenting with typography, imagining that the letters could all be different and expressive. The process moved towards a typographical outcome with little abstract characters with information about the course scattered around the brochure. I then experimented with different types of colour outcomes. The backside of the brochure uses strong typography in an easy to access layout. Spring 2013 I created two lego videos and a campaign in an answer to the Lego YCN brief. The lego stop motion videos focused on nostalgia for an adults youth. I created Lego stop motion videos on some of the biggest events of the 80’s and 90’s, for Ireland this of course was the Italia 90 world cup. I uploaded the videos to Youtube during the summer, they somehow ended up being featured on popular Irish websites such as Broadsheets and The Journal.ie. The intention of the campaign was to create viral videos, so I suppose the fact they went semi-viral in Dublin shows the project to be a success.
